Earthy and full of complex surface texture this view of the Hudson River and Catskill mountains in the morning is created using encaustic paints. Encaustic paint is made from all natural bees wax, damar resin and pigments. The paint is heated and applied to the panel while in its molten state. This exqusite artform is thousands of years old dating back to the 5th century BC and yields a glowing, translucent painting.
Created on a hardboard panel(9x12 in) with R&F Handmade encaustic paints and protected with an acrylic sealer. Encaustic paintings do not need glass but rather can be framed like an oil painting. |

Presentation :
A series of landscape paintings that explore the many miles and moods of the magnificant Hudson River, in honor of the Hudson River Quadricentennial. Some were painted en plein air on a recent painitng trip to the Hudson River Valley others from memory and references in the studio. Most are painted with Chroma Interactive acrylics on linen, several in encaustic (bees wax) paint on panel.
All will be part of a show opening on June 5th, 2009 at Montgomery Row, second level, 6423 Montgomery Street, Rhinebeck, NY. Show continues through July 15th.
Many will also be part of a show at Dominican College, Orangeburg, NY in October. More details on that to come.
